TRY RUNNING—YOU JUST MAY LEARN TO LIKE IT I personally enjoy running—or should I say jogging. But most older adults I talk to, say that running or jogging isn’t for them with answers such as: I never enjoyed it when I was younger, why would I now?; it looks too physically exerting; I’m afraid I might hurt myself; I don’t have the time. I realized I wasn’t going to convince any of them—and perhaps you—just by smiling and saying running’s fun. But then I thought, maybe they’d listen to an “authority.” So I searched online and found this short April...

KEEPING FIT DURING THE HOLIDAYS It’s been difficult enough for us to get in our exercise during this pandemic. Add holidays to the mix and most of us find keeping fit less of a priority during this busy time. It probably also has to do with colder weather keeping us inside, those hearty seasonal meals, and maybe adding in some holiday cheer. Heck, the gyms aren’t open and who wants to stick to a diet. Plus, you don’t want more stress and trying to keep to your usual workout program might do just that. Still, staying physically active will give...

Yet, I kept finding reasons to not begin exercising: I was too busy, I thought the workout routines would be boring, I didn’t want to join a health club. But I finally conquered my fitness obstacles after I realized what was my biggest challenge: I didn’t want to exercise cooped up indoors. So I went outside and began to jog a little, starting off at a mile twice a week. Next, I tightened and oiled the chain and pumped air...

STRENGTH TRAINING MADE EASY Often enough, you’ve heard that us older adults need to engage ourselves in both aerobic (cardio) activities and strength (resistance) training workouts. For me the aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, biking, and swimming are more fun and I look forward to doing at least one of these every day. Strength training, on the other hand, is more of a challenge and I have to make myself perform a dose of these exercises a couple of times a week. On that note, I began looking around for a simple at-home routine that most of us could...
HOW’S YOUR FUNCTIONAL FITNESS? There are a variety of different workouts in which you can partake. Some are for strength training, some for aerobic (cardio), others for flexibility and balance like yoga & tai chi. And then there are workouts for what is called functional fitness. These exercises focus on your ability to perform everyday-life activities such as carrying groceries, getting up from the floor, walking up and down stairs, or opening heavy doors. Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together as in daily tasks at home or work or play. Examples of these are: A Squat, because...
